Plattsburgh, NY- This Thanksgiving weekend four of the Nation’s top NCAA Division III hockey teams will compete in the inaugural LayerEight ShootOut held this year at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, home of the Plattsburgh State Cardinals. You don’t want to miss the action as the Middlebury Panthers, Norwich Cadets, Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the St. Olaf Oles of Northfield, Minnesota, compete for the LayerEight ShootOut Championship.
2023 marks the first year of the LayerEight ShootOut, bringing home the tradition of the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut, a Thanksgiving Weekend tournament that ran for 22 years. PrimeLink CEO Trent Trahan started the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut tournament with the three core schools of Plattsburgh State, Northwich, and Middlebury in 1998 and it became a Thanksgiving Weekend tradition for more than two decades. Trahan, majority owner and CEO of LayerEight and parent company Champlain Technology Group, is now breathing new life into the tournament with a fresh name, but the same excitement and passion.
The PrimeLink tournament was very well respected in the NCAA Division III hockey world as it often was a gauge of who would finish the year at the top of their respective conferences. The tournament has a long tradition of great invitational teams joining the ranks with annual staples Middlebury, Norwich, and Plattsburgh State. This year, St. Olaf University of Minnesota, will bring a western flair to the tournament and showcase a different style of hockey. It will be exhilarating to see if the invitational team will snag the championship, or if the title will be claimed by one of the three core competitors.
